Early Life and Education
John Gormley was born in 1957 in Singapore, at the British Military Hospital on Alexandra Road, to British and Australian parents serving during the Malayan Emergency.
After his parents emigrated to Canada, John was raised in Battleford, Saskatchewan. His affiliation with media began as a teenager at St. Thomas College, and in 1975 he started his radio career at CJNB in North Battleford.
In 1977, while attending the University of Saskatchewan, he joined 1250 CKOM in Saskatoon as a reporter and newsreader. The following year, he moved into talk radio as host of CKOM's one-hour daily open-line program, previously hosted by Raymond Earl and Bill (Stovin) Gerald. In 1982, Gormley and the talk show moved to Saskatoon's CFQC Radio 600.

Political Career
At the age of 27, Gormley entered federal politics in 1984 as a candidate for the Progressive Conservative Party under leader Brian Mulroney. He won the 1984 Canadian federal election, representing his hometown riding of The Battlefords—Meadow Lake, defeating New Democratic Party (NDP) M.P. Doug Anguish.
In his final year as an M.P., Gormley chaired the House of Commons Standing Committee on Communications and Culture and served on the Special Parliamentary Committee on the Canada-U.S. Free Trade Agreement.
He was defeated in the 1988 federal election by NDP candidate Len Taylor, who, coincidentally, had been Doug Anguish's executive assistant four years earlier.

Broadcasting: John Gormley Live
In 1998, Gormley returned to Saskatoon and teamed up with Rawlco Radio to launch his flagship morning talk show, John Gormley Live. The program debuted on September 9, 1998, and became Saskatchewan's top-rated talk radio program, simulcast weekday mornings on 650 CKOM in Saskatoon and 980 CJME in Regina.
For a quarter of a century, Gormley hosted the four-hour, five-day-a-week program known as "Saskatchewan's coffee row," creating a popular public forum for political discourse, pop culture and breaking news.
Known as the "House of Common Sense" and "Where Saskatchewan Comes to Talk," the program featured hard-hitting interviews with prime ministers, provincial premiers, authors and global figures. Over the years, Gormley shared stages and airwaves with figures ranging from Stephen Harper and Justin Trudeau to George W. Bush and Bill Clinton.
Known as the "Voice of Saskatchewan"—and never far from his robust conservative views—Gormley retired from daily broadcasting on November 24, 2023.
According to Rawlco Radio, the 25-year run of John Gormley Live encompassed approximately 6,000 shows, 25,000 guests and 60,000 callers, covering 36,000 topics.
